OnePlus 10 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: Which one has an edge when it comes to specs? – Economic Times

iPhone news

When the tech giant Apple dropped its iPhone 13 Pro Max in September last year for approximately Rs 1,29,990 in the market during its virtual 2021 tech launch, it generated a lot of noise for many reasons. One of the key factors, was, of course, the high price tag as is typical Apple.

Many were disappointed with the launch since a lot was expected from the smartphone. Similarly this year, we saw a lot of speculations do the rounds on social media about the OnePlus 10 Pro, one of the much awaited and talked about smartphones by the Chinese company owned by BK Electronics and Oppo.

The phone finally launched in China on January 11 in two different colours and three variants starting at Rs 54,499 approximately for the cheaper model.

Now when we looked at the OnePlus 10 Pro specifications and features for the market price, it is hard not to draw comparison from one of last year’s top trending smartphones, Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Here we try to put the two smartphones against each other in the most important areas such as camera quality, battery performance, processor and of course, the price segment (not-so-spoiler alert: OnePlus is super budget-friendly for a premium phone for those key features). Take a look.

Let’s measure the toughness: Display and sturdiness
Apple didn’t go out of its way to amaze the masses with the display and phone’s body as it pretty much looks identical to the 12 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display, flat sides and glory rails on the edges. But they did tone down the notch horizontally, however, it doesn’t make much of a difference. It still takes up space.

Finally, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 120Hz refresh rate display, and we have already seen this in most Android phones for a much less price tag. Though Apple has added its own ‘touch’ to the display by introducing ‘ProMotion’ – which makes scrolling a lot smoother, it still happens to be a feature a customer would expect from a premium phone that costs over Rs 1.20 lakh.

Coming to the phone’s body, iPhone 13 Pro Max is a lot heavier and thicker compared to its previous iPhones and flaunts bigger camera lenses as well. However, it doesn’t mean that iPhone 13 Pro Max can take heavy-duty usage and is fall-free. Even though the phone is sturdy, thanks to the Ceramic Shield, it’s still an iPhone. The screen isn’t scratch-proof either and if it’s kept along with keys, coins or clips in a pocket or a purse and ends up brushing against the objects, you may expect some lines on the phone.

Now talking about the OnePlus 10 Pro, which also flaunts a 6.7-inch display, made of Corning and Gorilla Glass Victus. The phone’s build boasts of an integrated metal middle frame with 3D nanocrystalline ceramics, striking a mix of design and tough materials which make OnePlus 10 Pro a hands-on smartphone.

For the camera at the back, the phone features a watch-grade 3D nanocrystalline ceramic lens cover. According to OnePlus, the smartphone is 30 per cent wear-resistant and flaunts over 60 hours of diamond triple polishing and can also withstand sparks. Unlike the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the OnePlus 10 Pro gives users a complete screen experience as it has a punch-hole design at the top on display, giving more room for display — best for gaming and video watching experience.

The smartphone maker has also introduced ColorOS 12.1 based on Android 12 which comes with a slew of interesting features such as Omoji, AI Self-Smoothing Engine 2.1, Ultra-HD Enhanced Picture Quality. Cross-screen Interconnection, Flashback Window, Video Continuation, Free Translation and more.

OnePlus has also introduced ColorOS 12.1 based on Android 12.

The 10 Pro also has Dual Color Calibration, which according to the tech company, makes OnePlus 10 Pro the first smartphone in the market to deliver accurate and natural colours at both high and low brightness levels.

The ‘M’ factor in camera: Megapixels and Modes
Camera is one segment where the iPhone stands unbeatable mostly. With the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple has once again proved why it’s a ‘picture perfect’ brand. A lot of things are new with the iPhone 13 Pro Max such as the Picture Profiles which lets you choose how you want your pictures to look from options such as Standard, Rich Contrast, Warm, Cool and Vibrant modes, and these types of colour options do bring your pictures to life.

There is a major difference in the picture tone as most Android photos flaunt vibrant colours by default, whereas with the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple lets the customer control the wheel by bringing modes into play which are completely adjustable and can be changed at any point. The iPhone 13 Pro Max applauds itself for its ProRes videos, Cinematic Mode, Portrait Mode and attractive sensors, while on the other hand, the OnePlus 10 Pro has Hasselblad XPAN Mode.

Both the models flaunt a triple camera setup, with the OnePlus 10 Pro packing a 48-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor with a wider 150-degree field-of-view. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 Pro Max features a 12 MP ultra-wide angle lens with a standard 120-degree field-of-view and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens.

On the front, 10 Pro has a 32-MP selfie camera, meanwhile iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera.

In this area, going by specs, the OnePlus 10 Pro does have an advantage over iPhone 13 Pro thanks to its billion colour solution for Natural Color Calibration and 12-bit RAW+. Just like iPhone, 10 Pro also has tons of different styles and colour modes to make your cinematic experience all the more fun and lively.

Enter the world of mobile gaming
Both the smartphones claim they are made for mobile gaming, thanks to their advanced top notch adaptive refresh display. The iPhone 13 Pro Max’s display’s ability to refresh up to 120Hz — combined with an impressive graphics performance of the new 5-core GPU on A15 Bionic — make the smartphone packed for power gaming.

OnePlus 10 Pro isn’t behind either, the HyperBoost full-link game frame stabilisation technology makes the smartphone a heavy duty gaming device. Graphic heterogeneous technology, GPA extreme frame stabilisation are some of the impressive features of OnePlus 10 Pro.

Overall performance: Processor, battery life
Coming to performance, the most important segment. OnePlus 10 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s new flagship chipset, SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen1, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max has Apple’s own latest chipset A15 Bionic, which is termed as the most powerful one by the tech company so far.

In every review, the iPhone 13 Pro Max excelled and turned out to be a winner, while we are yet to get our hands on the OnePlus 10 Pro phone which has only launched in China so far.

However, given the price difference between the smartphones in iPhone 13 series itself, Pro Max didn’t have any special qualities with the processor to stand out. They all performed similarly despite the huge price margin.

While the OnePlus 10 Pro comes coupled with 8GB or 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.1 two-lane storage, iPhone 13 Pro Max has a smaller RAM at just 6GB. However, the Apple smartphone does offer an extra storage option (it can go up to 1TB) if you are okay with shelling out more money (Rs 1,79,900.00 approximate price for 1TB model).

Price range and variants:
There’s obviously a huge price margin between the two phones, despite flaunting similar tech updates and features.

iPhone 13 Pro Max comes in four colour options: Sierra Blue, Silver, Gold and Graphite along with four variants such as 128GB (Rs 1,29,900) , 256GB (Rs 1,39,900), 512GB (Rs 1,59,900) and 1TB (Rs 1,79,900).

Whereas OnePlus 10 Pro comes in two colours black out and all thing things green, and three variants: 8GB+ 128GB, 8GB+256GB, and 12GB+256GB configurations at CYN 4699 (around Rs 54,499), CYN 4999 (around Rs 57,979), and CYN 5299 (around Rs 61,458) respectively.
