MORE FROM FORBESWhy New iPhone Upgrades Suddenly Became More Expensive

Respected industry display specialist Ross Young has revealed that Apple is set to shun pressure from fans to bring Touch ID back for the iPhone 14 range. Furthermore, Young’s remarkable track record means those pinning their hopes to other sources now face a reality check.

“Doesn’t look like Touch ID this year” tweeted Young, adding a sad emoji reaction when quizzed on the topic. An in-display version of Touch ID has been among the most wanted features in recent years after the Coronavirus pandemic made Face ID less reliable, despite Apple’s best attempts at different workarounds.

This is a notable decision for multiple reasons. Aside from the convenience of two biometric options (Touch ID was expected to be added in addition to Face ID), every iPhone rival offers fingerprint recognition which is a clear advantage in a mask-wearing society.

The decision also takes on added long term significance before it is likely to set back Apple’s ambitious plans of turning iPhones into digital passports. Here are a combination of both biometric methods (look at your phone and touch the display) would provide the high level security required to make this happen.

Yes, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models still have a lot to get excited about: all-new cameras, bigger batteries and the move to eSIM only among them. That said, Apple’s notch-less iPhone 14 Pro design has polarized fan opinion and the range is also likely to get more expensive.
