iPhone news

IPHONE users will soon receive severe weather alerts straight to their pocket just as another heatwave hits the UK.

The feature was spotted by experts currently testing iOS 16, Apple’s upcoming big software update for the iPhone.

It comes as parts of the country look set to swelter once again, with Met Office chiefs predicting temperatures could peak at 35C, or even an isolated 36C in some areas on Saturday.

“Now you can get a notification when a severe weather alert has been issued,” Apple is telling iPhone owners.

“Weather can send you notifications for rain, snow and certain relevant severe weather alerts.”

Users are able to set notifications for their current location, if they provide Apple permission to access it.

The feature was spotted by tech expert Matt Navarra, who posted screenshots on Twitter.

“New on iOS 16?” he said.

“Severe Weather alerts feature in the UK #welltimed #heatwave”

People are able to try new features on iOS 16 before they’re released by enrolling on Apple’s beta program.

How to join the iOS 16 beta program

To join the iOS beta, you just need to sign up on Apple’s website here.

But before you do, think seriously about whether installing an iOS beta is right for you.

By its very nature, it’s test software, meaning there are bugs – some which can be quite troublesome, making it a bit risky for your main device.

“Help make the next releases of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS and HomePod software our best yet,” Apple explains.

“As a member of the Apple Beta Software Program, you can take part in shaping Apple software by test-driving pre-release versions and letting us know what you think.”

The beta will also feature a special app called Feedback Assistant where you can report any issues you find.

You’ll need a valid Apple ID, and that’s it – no fees or compensation involved.

Installing the beta also won’t affect your hardware warranty.

You can leave the beta at any time.
