iPhone Flip: Release date, price, leaks, and more details

We’ve been hearing stories about the iPhone Flip for a while now, but that doesn’t mean the speculated Apple-built foldable phone is close to shipping – just that the tech gadget world is curious to see what the Californian giant’s first such mobile will look like. Samsung’s successful mobiles like the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 have been joined by rivals from Huawei, Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo, Honor, and others, and it’s only a matter of time until Apple follows suit.

It’s unclear how long Apple has been working on a foldable phone – which may be called the iPhone Flip or iPhone Fold depending on its form factor – but the tech giant is known for keeping its projects hidden until they’re ready to be revealed. Similarly, Apple has a history of delaying the release of its own versions of innovative products, so we weren’t shocked when the iPhone Flip or Fold didn’t make its debut alongside the iPhone 13 in September 2021 – perhaps it will with the iPhone 14, but don’t hold your breath.

Getting a foldable phone with Apple’s level of polish, on the other hand, is appealing. Only a few of the phones have been widely released, and some of the most serious flaws, such as display durability and battery life, have yet to be resolved. The classic adage goes that the smartphone era didn’t begin until the first iPhone was released in 2007 – and while this oversimplifies phone history, it does highlight how much Apple’s product designs impact device kinds.

There’s a reason we have broad facial recognition but considerably fewer headphone jacks, for example, for better or worse. However, the final Apple device will very certainly be the most sophisticated foldable we’ve yet seen.

Foldable iPhone release date and price

According to one source, we won’t see a foldable iPhone until 2023 at the earliest, and that story even stated it could be later. Indeed, we’ve heard from a few more sources that the iPhone Fold won’t be available until at least 2025. So, while we may be a long way from a commercially available foldable iPhone, given how skillfully Apple hides its new designs, the device could be closer than we think.

We also don’t know how much this will cost when it arrives, but given that many foldable phones cost far over $1000 / £1000 / AU$2000, anticipate it to be a steep price to pay. We only know the rumor that it will be dubbed the iPhone Flip, which is likely a reference to the Galaxy Z Flip-like patents that hint at a clamshell folding format.

Foldable iPhone leaks and rumors

Foldable iPhone rumors now split into two camps: one that claims the gadget will have a real folding display, and the other that claims the device would have two independent screens separated by a hinge. A patent dump from February 2019 revealed several concepts, including one with a huge display on the interior of folding parts with a single hinge, and another with two hinges for a hypothetical three screens that fold in on themselves in a Z-shaped structure.

Apple could be working on a foldable with two distinct displays separated by a hinge, according to other patents, such as the one discovered in March 2020. While the patented design shows that Apple would try to keep the bezel between the screens to a minimum, it would still be more obvious than a fully foldable long display.

While it’s only a ‘current prototype,’ it’s described as having rounded edges like the iPhone 11, as opposed to the squared-off edges of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series. According to Prosser, the sensors that check Face ID will be contained in a ‘little forehead’ on the exterior display.

Apple’s foldable phone could also have a protective layer on top of the screen to assist prevent fractures by preventing cracks and filling up pre-existing micro-cracks. Apple owns a patent for this technology, so it’s something the corporation is considering.

A thin yet robust hinge is described in an Apple patent that may be utilized with a smartphone with a flexible display. This doesn’t reveal much, but it does add to the evidence that an iPhone Fold or iPhone Flip is on the way. Furthermore, according to one claim, Apple already has two foldable iPhone designs that have passed durability tests. That doesn’t imply it’ll happen any time soon, but it’s an encouraging sign that Apple is on the right course.
