Ask Angelia: Will S.C. join other states in offering digital IDs via iPhone? – Greenville News

iPhone news

Question: Will SC participate in digital ID for iPhone like other states are prepared to do?

Answer: Arizona became the first state last month to offer a digital driver’s license and state ID in the iPhone Wallet, according to Apple.

Apple said in that same announcement that states such as Colorado, Hawaii, Colorado, Mississippi, Ohio, and the territory of Puerto Rico will join Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utaha in being states that will soon offer this feature to their residents.

South Carolina could be looking at offering a similar option.

Ask Angelia: Are there enough jobs to support all this Greenville-area growth?

Lauren Phillips, spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, said the state House of Representatives approved, and the Senate Finance Committee concurred with a proviso to study the topic and its adoption in the state.

The proviso calls for the DMV to lead a study committee that will make recommendations on implementing and accepting mobile identities in South Carolina.

The committee will meet at least quarterly throughout the fiscal year, and the DMV will be charged with authoring recommendations on adopting mobile identities by the end of the fiscal year.

Ask Angelia: What’s the law regarding delivery trucks stopping on roads?

The recommendations from the committee will be addressed to the Chairmen of Senate Finance, Senate Transportation, House Ways and Means, and House Education and Public Works, the proviso said.

“At this point, it is too hard to say what will come out of this study, but the agency is committed to ensuring that any solution provides convenience both to citizens and mobile identity users (retailers, bankers, hospitals, etc.),” Phillips said.
