iPhone news

Foldable smartphones are the future. Perhaps, this is the reason why smartphone makers such as Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi, Motorola, etc., are coming up with a wide range of foldable devices. When the world is turning its attention towards foldable devices, it is only plausible that Apple may integrate it in some way or the other.

According to recent reports, the Cupertino-based tech company is testing E Ink cover for foldable devices. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that the iPhone maker is in the process of testing an E Ink cover display for its foldable device. Ever since the development, speculations are rife that the tech giant may be working towards folding panels for a future iPhone and iPad that is expected to launch around 2025.

Kuo in a tweet said that Apple is using E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for its foldable device’s cover screen and tablet-like applications. He said that the colour EPD has the potential to become a mainstream solution for foldable devices as they are excellent in saving power.

“Apple is testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for future foldable device’s cover screen & tablet-like applications. The color EPD has the potential to become a mainstream solution for foldable devices’ must-have cover/second screen thanks to its excellent power-saving,” tweeted Kuo.

What Is An E Ink Display?

They are also known as reflective displays. While LCD projects backlight through the display towards your eyes, an E Ink display uses no backlight and relies on ambient light from the surroundings to reflect back to your eyes. While E Ink is known for its monochrome screen used mainly on e-readers such as Amazon Kindle, they also come in a series of colour screens.

Today, most foldable devices have a large folding inner display with a smaller outer display that shows notifications. However, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Oppo Find N have OLED panels for both outer and inner displays. Kuo believes that Apple will likely use E Ink screen for a less responsive outer display which could be power-efficient. While Apple’s foldable device may take some time to arrive, the latest development indicates the vision of Apple.

More On Accessibility Features

Meanwhile, the tech giant recently previewed a wide range of accessibility features for its users. These features include Door Detection, Apple Watch Mirroring, Live Captions, and more. The Door Detection feature helps individuals with low vision to locate doors using their iPhone or iPad.

Users with physical disabilities who depend on Voice Control and Switch Control will be able to control their Apple Watch Series 6 and 7 using Apple Watch Mirroring via Airplay on their iPhones. Another feature Live Captions across Apple devices will help users to follow audio content easily and in a streamlined manner.
