Apple is expected to launch four iPhone models in its flagship 2022 lineup – Apple iPhone 14, Apple iPhone 14 Max, Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max. As per known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, only the Pro models in the lineup will get a new chipset and the other models will get an A15 Bionic chipset that made its debut with the Apple iPhone 13 series last year. Now, a new report by iDrop News suggests that the tech giant may rebrand the chipset as A16 with an aim to keep it in line with its typical annual chip refresh cycle.
The report further suggests that the new chip that will debut with Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max will be called A16 Pro. This is not the first time Apple is reusing an old chipset in a new smartphone of the flagship lineup. The Cupertino based company did the same with the Apple iPhone 5S and Apple iPhone 5C. For those who do not know, the iPhone 5S was powered by the A7 chipset while the iPhone 5C was powered by the older A6 chip.
Reports suggest that this move will help Apple to reduce the starting price of the Apple iPhone 14 series as the company is said to ditch the ‘mini’ model this year.
Earlier this week, Max Weinbach shared detailed schematics of Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Apple 14 Pro Max on Twitter suggesting that the smartphones may have a thicker overall design and prominent camera bump. As per the schematics, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be slightly smaller than the iPhone 13 Pro Max when it comes to width. However, both the devices are said to have almost identical height. When it comes to iPhone 14 Pro, the schematics suggest that the device will have the same dimensions as the iPhone 13 Pro. However, it may also have a bigger camera bump.
