Newer Apple iPhones have a secret button hidden from view you might not know about – Leicestershire Live

iPhone news

Modern smartphones are simply amazing with the features and functions they can put in front of your eyes at the push of a button, tap of a screen, or voice command.

But they can still hold a secret or two behind the scenes – or should that be, behind the screens.

Because Apple iPhones of a certain model have a secret button that many users may not know about.

But what does it do? Well, pretty much whatever you want it to.

According to Mirror Online, the furtive feature is called ‘Back Tap’ and it works using the Apple logo on the back of iPhones.

The feature was introduced with the iOS14 software update allowing the user to carry out quick tasks by double tapping the rear of the mobile.

The new feature can be used on on iPhone 8 and onwards, so those who don’t allow their device to automatically update may not have access to this new feature.

You may have to go into your phone’s settings now and turn the feature on.

To change the settings:

  • Go to ‘Settings’
  • Go to ‘Accessibility’
  • Go to ‘Touch’
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the menu, where you will find a setting called ‘Back Tap’

When you enter this setting, it will have options for ‘double tap’ and ‘triple tap’ depending on the way you want to use it.

You can assign a wide variety of phone functions to this action and you can also choose two different functions to this back button, one triggered by a double tap and one by a triple tap, from screenshots, to returning to the Home or Lock screens, or switching between apps.

Users can even set a double or triple tap to trigger an Accessibility Shortcut to quickly access features like Assistive Touch, Siri Shortcuts, Magnifier, Reachability, and Voice Over.

The setting can be adjusted, changed and reassigned however you like.

Using a ‘Back Tap’ command is potentially much quicker and more intuitive than unlocking your iPhone and identifying the appropriate function in the usual manner.

It can also replicate common gestures and inputs that you find fiddly to execute.

People who have particularly heavy or thick phone cases for their iPhone, that the tap on the logo may not work, but the feature should still be usable through most phone cases.
